A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a torso was found in secluded woodland.

The remains of a man who was "likely to be aged older than 40" were found wrapped in plastic by a passer-by in Kersal Wetlands, Salford, on Thursday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

Specialists have been carrying out DNA tests to identify the victim.

A GMP representative said a man in his 20s from Salford had been arrested on Saturday night and remained in custody.

Ch Supt Tony Creely, who previously said tests had shown the victim was "a man who could not have survived", told a press conference earlier that the force was continuing to "work hard to determine the identity of the person whose remains have been found".

"Through initial forensic and DNA testing, the victim is a man who is likely to be aged over 40 and who had only been deceased for a matter of days," he said.

"We have a team of specially trained detectives within the major incident team working around the clock to investigate the full circumstances that led to the victim being found here.

"Last night, we made an arrest of a man in his 20s from the local area on suspicion of murder.

"He remains in custody and will be questioned by detectives later today."

The force representative confirmed that nothing other than the human remains had been found at the scene and added that officers were keen to hear from anyone with information about what happened.
