
A lot can happen in a year and while an uncountable number of events took place across the globe.
Documenting all these events could take years but in this article the Star picked just a few that got the mist attention around the globe.
They events are in no particular order.
US elections
This is perhaps the most famous of all given the number of countries that follow US elections across the globe.
The election saw former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump face off with Democratic Party’s and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The election was eventually won by Trump who set to assume presidency on January 20, 2025.
UK elections
In July the United Kingdom went into early elections called by then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The result of the election was Labour party winning a majority for the first time since 2014.
This led to Keir Starmer becoming the new UK Prime Minister. His party winning more than 400 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons – the lower house of Britain’s parliament.
Bangladesh protests
In July, protests in Bangladesh as peaceful demands from university students to abolish quotas in civil service jobs - a third of these are reserved for relatives of veterans from Bangladesh’s war for independence from Pakistan in 1971.
The campaigners argued the system was discriminatory and needed to be overhauled and their request was largely met, but the protests soon transformed into a wider anti-government movement.
Weeks of anti-government protests toppled its long-serving prime minister Sheikh Hasina who resigned and fled the country.
Huge crowds then stormed her official residence in Dhaka amid looting and disorder in the capital. At least 20 people died.
Russia – Ukraine war
While this war is headed to the third year it has formed part of the many things that occurred this year. Russia attacks against Ukraine increased. In some instances, Ukraine retaliated with its own attacks against Russia.
The use of sophisticated weapons has also been recorded this year.
Israel – Hamas war
While this conflict started in October 2023, it has gone int the entire 2024 with Israel continue its offensive into Gaza in efforts to get rid of the Hamas group.
Israel – Hezbollah conflict
This also started in October 2023 when Hezbollah began firing rockets at Israel in support of its ally Hamas in Gaza and Israel launched retaliatory air strikes in Lebanon.
The conflict escalated in late September 2024, when Israel launched an intense air campaign and ground invasion of southern Lebanon.
In Lebanon, more than 3,800 people have been killed since October 2023
Ukraine Peace Summit
The first Ukraine Peace Summit was held in Switzerland in June 2024. More than 100 countries and organizations gathered at a resort near Lucerne in Switzerland for the conference initiated by Ukraine. Russia did not participate in it.
16th BRICS Summit
The 16th BRICS summit was held in Kazan, Russia from October 22 to 24, 2024. During its BRICS presidency this year, Russia focused on promoting the entire range of partnership and cooperation within the framework of the association on three key tracks – politics and security, the economy and finance, and cultural and humanitarian ties.
Pakistan bombings
In February 2024, Pakistan went into elections. The elections were supposed to be held in August 2023 but were postponed.
A day before the elections, A pair of bombings at the election offices of a political party and an independent candidate in southwest Pakistan killed at least 24 people and wounded more than two dozen others
