BABY TRAVIS

Give doctors the benefit of doubt

In Summary

• The Senate Health committee found that KNH was negligent in handling Travis Maina

• Travis had a pitchfork lodged in his head following an accident playing in October, 2022

The Senate has found  Kenyatta National Hospital liable for negligence in the death of young Travis Maina on October 11, 2022.

Unfortunately doctors are often held to be guilty until proven innocent, contrary to the rules of natural justice.

The death of Travis was probably unavoidable, unfortunate as it was. He would probably have passed on even in the finest hospital in New York.

He had a prong of a pitchfork lodged deep inside his brain. Another prong had penetrated the brain to a shallow depth.

The farm implement was old so it would have carried dirt inside his brain. That would have caused serious infection which would have been impossible to clean out. Removing the pitchfork itself was likely to cause fatal bleeding.

The Health Committee found that KNH took 18 hours before moving Travis to the theatre for an operation.

But this delay is understandable. The doctors were struggling to decide what to do at a time when every option was bad.

In future, let’s give doctors the benefit of the doubt. Yes, there are cases of genuine negligence but let’s not jump to negative conclusions too quickly.
