The recent wave of nationwide demonstrations has once again been marred by acts of violence, vandalism and looting.

While the majority of protesters have been exercising their constitutional right to peacefully assemble, it is deeply troubling to learn that some individuals have been exploiting these demonstrations for their own criminal agenda.

According to reports, the police have identified at least six people who are suspected of mobilising and ferrying individuals to infiltrate the protests and carry out acts of destruction and theft. This is a despicable abuse of the democratic process and cannot be tolerated.

Kenya prides itself as a nation governed by the rule of law, and it is imperative that this principle is upheld. The perpetrators of these criminal acts, whether they be the individuals on the ground carrying out the looting and attacks, or the masterminds behind the scenes, must be swiftly brought to justice.

The police must act with urgency to conclude their investigations and ensure that all those responsible are apprehended. The full force of law must be applied to send a clear message that such behaviour will not be condoned. Anything less would be a disservice to the vast majority of Kenyans who are exercising their right to protest peacefully and constructively.
