The Auditor General is a key cog in the national management of parastatals and public financial institutions.
Year after year, the office of the Auditor General brings to the public a long list of companies or commissions that are in breach of set financial management standards.
The office of the Auditor General in such cases always recommends punishment and or further investigations that sully the reputation of the managers who fail to follow the laid down procedures.
It is no exaggeration to say the Auditor General causes many rouge bosses sleepless nights when their financial books are out of order. That means the AG can be an easy target when in office or after they retire.
The more reason an accountants lobby group has proposed that the AG be handed security, a car (renewed every four years), a gardener and perks commensurate with the high office in which they served.
But MPs think it is an unnecessary spending of public money and have rejected the idea. They are wrong.
The retirement perks will give the AG the confidence to report without fear knowing that their retirement will be financially safe and that their lives will be protected.
