STAR ILLUSTRATION

Revelations by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo that the trafficking and use of cocaine is on the rise in Kenya should be a case of concern to everyone.

According to the PS (story page 2) the traffickers have changed route and are now bringing in their contraband from Ethiopia into Kenya using the Moyale route, a shift from the traditional Coast route.

The effects of drug abuse are innumerable, key among them being an upsurge in crime, mental problems, destabilisation of families and communities, and lost productivity among others.

Law enforcers play a cardinal role in helping contain drug trade and consumption, and the government must invest well in border patrols.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, East Africa is attractive to international drug trafficking syndicates as the countries have ineffective border control.

But even as police battle the criminals, parents, religious leaders and society have an equally important role in checking the increased use.

Let’s all support the government in its battle against drug abuse lest we lose a generation.
