  • Some lucky few are dispatched to the Middle East to slave away. As she nears the end of her contract, she must look back and ask herself whether the TSC is worse or better than she found it.
  • As government looks forward to hiring a new CEO, it must be an individual with the courage to give the office the moral authority to say no when greedy, self-seeking politicians and bureaucrats come calling

NANCY Macharia, the Teachers Service Commission boss, was in Parliament on Tuesday to publicly deny that her commission has delegated the power to recruit teachers to politicians and a host of faceless influence peddlers.

But as to be expected, she made a desperate job of telling the public she does not hand out teacher employment forms to strangers.

Public servants have long made recruitments of police officers, soldiers soldiers, prison wardens and forest guards, an avenue through which they find credit for finding jobs for the many well-educated but unemployed youths now in just about every corner of Kenya.

The TSC have disappointingly failed to fend off politicians, who instead of creating policies that should create jobs, have resorted to shortcuts that erode the very society they pretend to serve and in the process ruin the lives of millions of brilliant young men and women who now miserably resort to gambling and drugs.
