What is self-awareness?

Over the past five years, self-awareness has undergone extensive examination, revealing two primary dimensions.

Internal self-awareness reflects the alignment of our values, passions, and aspirations with our environment. Conversely, external self-awareness pertains to how we are perceived by others.

Some elements of self-awareness are:

  • Emotional intelligence: The adeptness in recognizing how emotions shape thoughts and actions, coupled with the skill to regulate them effectively.

  • Embrace self-acceptance: Recognizing and embracing your authentic self is pivotal in the pursuit of self-awareness. Consider, for instance, acknowledging that you may not inherently possess extroverted qualities.

  • Consciousness: The capacity to observe and comprehend the internal workings of your mind, including emotions and thoughts, as they respond to various stimuli.

  • Self-knowledge: Also referred to as self-concept, this pertains to the depth of understanding regarding one's identity, encompassing values, principles, beliefs, and self-perceptions.

  • Self-reflection: The proficiency in introspection, allowing for deep contemplation of personal emotions, experiences, and behaviors to foster a greater understanding of oneself and one's interactions within the social milieu.

  • Crafting a life roadmap: Gain clarity on your aspirations by delineating them along a timeline. This structured approach not only elucidates your priorities but also serves as a steadfast guide, ensuring unwavering focus on the significant milestones you've set for yourself.

What are the benefits of self-awareness?

  • Enhanced career decision-making: By comprehensively grasping your strengths, weaknesses, and values, you can make informed choices that resonate with your interests and objectives.

  • Optimized job satisfaction: The ability to discern work environments and roles that harmonize with your preferences can significantly enhance your overall job fulfillment.

  • Exemplary leadership qualities: A profound understanding of your influence on others empowers you to become a compelling leader.

  • Elevated emotional intelligence: Cultivating robust emotional intelligence, particularly crucial for leadership roles, equips you with invaluable skills for navigating complex professional scenarios.

  • Confidence and lasting impact: Bolstered by a firm belief in your capabilities, you can leave a lasting impression during interviews, fostering confidence in potential employers.

  • Robust professional connections: Mastering the art of authentic self-presentation and adept social adaptation facilitates the establishment of a resilient and expansive professional network.

  • Exceptional communication prowess: Honed communication skills, characterized by empathy and effectiveness, are highly coveted attributes across all sectors.

How can I tell if I'm self-aware?

Despite widespread belief in one's self-awareness, studies led by psychologist Tasha Eurich and her team indicate that merely 10-15 per cent of individuals truly meet the criteria.

High levels of self-awareness can manifest in various ways, but some common signs include:

  • Choosing response over reaction: Pause to evaluate the source of your reaction, to respond thoughtfully and effectively.

  • Recognising projection: Half the battle is won when you discern the flaws you project onto others.

  • Learning through relationships: Whether intimate or platonic, interactions with others serve as mirrors reflecting facets of ourselves. Embrace these opportunities for self-discovery and growth.

  • Embracing constructive criticism: While you need not agree with every critique, maintaining an open mind fosters invaluable growth. Constructive criticism, albeit uncomfortable at times, stands as our most enlightening instructor.

  • Taming the ego: Bid farewell to your ego; it's not your ally.

  • Addressing character defects: Craft a list of character traits for personal enhancement that fosters self-improvement and introspection.

  • Do you delve into your past to pinpoint areas of misstep and growth opportunities? Understanding the where, why, and how of past experiences empowers you to chart a course toward self-improvement.

  • Embracing the present moment: The present is our sole reality; fretting about the future or dwelling on the past only begets anxiety. Redirect your focus to the present moment, where true control resides.

  • Mastering self-control: While we lack dominion over external factors, our thoughts, actions, and reactions remain within our grasp. Cultivating mastery over these internal realms enables us to navigate life with resilience and grace.
