150 Meru PWDs to gets artificial limbs from India

India based NGO Narayan Seva Sansthan took measurents of beneficiary in Meru.

North Imenti MP Rahim Dawood has partnered with Hindu Samaj Meru and an India based NGO Narayan Seva Sansthan to give artificial limbs.

The project is set to benefit at least 150 people.

The legislator said about 175 turned up to register so for artificial limbs which take three to six months to make.

“We have received people not only from North Imenti and we will not lock out anybody including those from neighbouring counties in Laikipia and Tharaka Nithi those who have not gotten they will be given priorities next time,” he said.

He said they have began talks with Suryakant Patni who is based in Nairobi and he could be given a machine from India that could ease the burden of manufacturing the limbs.

The manufacturing will done in the constituency, easing the burden for many people who are living with disabilities.

“In 2020 we had measurements for about 200 people but they could not go to India because of Covid-19, if we have a factory it will help ease burden,” Dawood said.

The legislator spoke on Saturday at CDF grounds in Meru town North Imenti where the group from India accessed the PWDS.

A donors from India gives the services free of charge.

Dawood pledged to set up a factory in the future to help out people where he promised sh1 million.

“I will also involve other legislators and other well wishers because the factory will help the entire country,”

He said they expect the limbs to be ready by August.

Meru county chairperson for people living with disabilities Mawira Muguongo thanked the MP for emphasizing on caliper shoes.

He said they are a big challenge to people living with disabilities where people from as far as Samburu came to benefit.

Muguongo challenged other leaders in the county to emulate Dawood to help the people living with disabilities.

A beneficiary, Francis Gitonga, who is a leader of about 90 disabled people in Kiutine said they used to go up to Nairobi to access such services that is about 300 kilometres away from Igembe Central.

The Non governmental organization has existed for over 40 years.

He said many people who get disabled is as a result of accidents involving motorcycles and cars while others are from diseases.

He said the sponsor who require specialised treatment to go for check up free of charge.
