Heavy rains on Friday evening left trails of destruction during in Kericho town as skies opened after a long dry spell.

The heavy down pour destroyed trees and sewer lines in the Central Business District(CBD).

A number of hoteliers counted losses after broken sewer lines overstretched by rain water spew raw waste into hotels with underground lines.

Stench from of the raw waste forced a number of customers from the hotels and other eatery joints in the CDB.

The current sewer line was established during the colonial days at time when the population in the town stood 6,000 residents.

Today the population has risen to over 500,000 residents, stretching the sewer line during the rain season.

Kericho Water and Sanitation Company(KEWASCO) Managing Director Kibii Siele admitted that the town is facing sewer challenges.

He said the current sewer line cannot cope with a growing population.

The manager said plans are underway to expand the small sewer line which was established during the colonial days.

Siele said it also poses a threat to health matter more so cholera outbreak and related waterborne diseases.

Tea farmers welcomed the rains after prolonged absence that had resulted to drying up of tea bushes in the last five months.

Some multinationals companies had resulted to pruning of mature tea bushes after declining in green leaf  production,occasioned by the drought.
