Kwale Stadium is now set to host the Mashujaa Day celebrations on Sunday, October 20.
Interior PS Raymond Omollo said construction of the stadium has been completed and the facility is now ready for use by Kenyans in marking the momentous occasion.
“We have just also undertaken the dress rehearsal by the Kenya Defence Forces presided over by the CDF and everything is in place for this celebration,” Omolo said.
He spoke on Wednesday during a tour of the stadium to inspect its readiness and final touches ahead of the Mashujaa Day celebrations whose theme is on Affordable Housing.
The PS was accompanied by Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani and the National Celebrations Steering Committee members.
The
newly constructed Kwale stadium located in the Matuga subcounty is expected to
significantly impact the county's economic and sporting activities.
PS Omollo thanked the National Celebrations Steering Committee for working round the clock to ensure construction of the stadium is completed within schedule.
“Kwale is ready to host the celebrations and the team has worked really hard to ensure that this becomes a reality,” he said.
“The
people of Kwale are welcoming the rest of the country to these celebrations;
the stadium has a capacity of over 10,000 people and we are appealing to the
residents of Kwale and the rest of the country to join us as His Excellency the
President will be presiding over the Mashujaa Day celebrations.”
The PS said this year, the country will commemorate the courage of past heroes as well as celebrate the making of today's champions.
“From the ashes of struggle, a new generation is rising, empowered by the government's Bottom-Up vision. Central to these celebrations is the Affordable Housing Program (AHP), a transformative initiative that is creating opportunities for Kenyans to build and bloom, becoming homeowners and heroes in their small but impactful ways,” he said.
“Mashujaa” means “Heroes” in Swahili.
The Mashujaa Day holiday is a tribute to those who made significant contributions to Kenya's struggle for independence from colonial rule.
The day is used to honour and celebrate the bravery and sacrifices of the Kenyan people who fought for their freedom.
