Nairobi to host one of 106 locations for Light The World Giving Machines

The popular vending machines give users an opportunity to donate a variety of much-needed items

Nairobi county will become the first African city to host the Innovative and Giving Machines, a charitable initiative supported by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The launch date for Giving Machines in Nairobi has been set for November 30 at noon on the Level One  at the Sarit.

Giving Machines are big red vending machines through which individuals can donate specific items delivered by NGOs located in Nairobi which will begin November 30, 2024 and run through January 1, 2025 and will be located on Level Two at Sarit Centre Nairobi

Giving Machines are vending machines that enable users to donate items like clothing, baby supplies, food, school supplies, medicine, training seminars, chickens and goats for people in need.

The popular vending machines give users an opportunity to donate a variety of much-needed items through local and global charities.

The introduction of Giving Machines for the first time in Africa was made with a press and public announcement on October 11, 2024 at Royal Nairobi Golf Club. The event followed a Giving Machines benefit golf tournament.

Giving Machines began in Salt Lake City, Utah (USA), during the 2017 Christmas Season. The following year Giving Machines commenced in four additional cities.

In 2023 Giving Machines were in 61 cities around the world.

Since 2017, more than $33 million of vital products and services have been donated through Giving Machines. In December 2024, 106 cities will feature Giving Machines, including the first city in Africa - Nairobi, Kenya.

Elder Thierry K. Mutombo, President of the Africa Central Area of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says hosting the vending machine in Nairobi will be a thrilling experience for the continent of Africa at large.

"We are thrilled to have Giving Machines for the first time in Africa, in Nairobi, this December and January. The Giving Machines engage the community in lifting and changing lives as Kenyans contribute specific products and services to people in need," Mutombo said.

"Six noble NGO’s, who do great work in Africa, will be featured in The Nairobi Giving Machines. We appreciate the generosity of Sarit in providing an excellent location at Sarit for The Giving Machines from November 30, 2024, to January 15, 2025."

The six Kenya-based  NGO’s who will fulfil the 30 items donated through the Nairobi Giving Machines are: • Kenya Red Cross, UNICEF,  Uthabiti of Kenya,  Clean Up Kenya, Church World Service (CWS), Caritas of Kenya and the Catholic Church’s humanitarian arm in Kenya.

Giving Machines sponsor the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints pays for all Machine costs including credit and debit card and MPESA transaction fees.

The machines provide an instant act of service for people looking to help those in their community.

Visitors can make donations by selecting and paying for items ranging in price from Sh200 to Sh10,000. 100 per cent of donations made through giving machines go to the NGO’s who fulfill the donated items.
