President William Ruto has affirmed that no member of staff from the defunct National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) will lose his job.

Speaking on during the Mashujaa Day celebrations, Ruto said his administration will ensure all who served under NHIF transition to the Social Health Authority (SHA).

He went on to say that he appreciates their dedication to service even as the transition continues.

“We will make sure everyone who has served in NHIF is transitioned into SHIF,” he said.

“I am aware that during this transition period, employees of the former NHIF will be managed in accordance with the provisions of the Social Health Insurance Act of 2023. I want to assure them that no one will lose their jobs, and I appreciate their dedication and service during this transition.”

This comes amid fears that NHIF staff will lose their jobs as SHIF looks to hire new staff.

A few weeks ago, Medical Services Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai said staff from the now defunct fund would have to re-apply and vetting would be rehired under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

He noted that while NHIF had 1,743 staff members, SHA already has 485 interim employees who were previously NHIF employees.

He noted that they are still reconstituting and more people would be employed.

“We are still populating. The current NHIF staff shall, upon application and vetting process, be transitioned to SHA” Kimtai said on Citizen TV.
