24 years: Safaricom contributes Sh983bn to economy

Safaricom has contributed Sh983 billion to the Kenyan economy in the last financial year, creating 1,283,329 jobs, according to its 13th Sustainable Business Report launched today.

The report, themed "Accelerating Digital Inclusion", highlights the company’s transformative impact on Kenyan society as it transitions to becoming Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030.

The report reveals that Safaricom's economic contribution through its operations amounted to Sh562.2 billion, while M-PESA's social value stood at Sh348 billion. M-PESA continues to play a vital role in transforming lives by positively impacting customers, agents, and dealers.

It also stated that Safaricom has reached over 8 million Kenyans, while it has also increased women in leadership roles to 42.4 per cent through its foundations.

 “Safaricom has been navigating rapidly changing business and social environments by deploying sustainable business practices, looking ahead, our ESG principles will be anchored on technology as we transition to a TechCo by 2030,” CEO Peter Ndegwa said.

The telco is said to have embedded nine of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its operations, driving initiatives in climate action, clean energy solutions, and diversity and inclusion.

The company has achieved gender parity in its workforce, with 50 per cent of its employees now women. Safaricom’s entry into Ethiopia has also shown significant progress, with 4.5 million customers registered, 38 per cent of the population connected, and 84 of the company’s sites in the country being solar-powered.

Chairman of Safaricom PLC, Adil Khawaja, emphasized the company's ongoing commitment to driving positive change across Kenya and Ethiopia, stating, that the telco has also achieved 23 per cent female representation in senior leadership positions.

“As we work towards our vision of being Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company, our commitment is to drive positive change and create lasting value for our customers and stakeholders in Kenya and Ethiopia. We have embraced the SDGs as a means of driving innovation, lowering costs through clean energy and building partnerships to realise our ambitions,” said  Khawaja.

As Safaricom celebrates its 24th anniversary, it continues to lead in innovation, inclusion, and sustainability, ensuring its impact resonates far beyond telecommunications.
