Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson has announced a new county initiative aimed at providing education and skills training for vulnerable families.
In a statement on Monday, Governor Sakaja said the Nairobi City County has partnered with several local colleges to offer free short courses, equipping residents with practical skills to enhance employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.
“This is an opportunity for all. If you are a Nairobi resident from a vulnerable family, this initiative could be your chance to learn a new trade,” Sakaja said.
Echoing the announcement, County Executive for Talent, Skills Development and Care Brian Mulama highlighted the significance of the initiative.
He noted that it aims to uplift those who may not otherwise afford training, providing a stepping stone to self-reliance and growth.
“Under the leadership of Governor Sakaja, we are dedicated to empowering our youth with essential skills,” Mulama said.
“There are hundreds who would love such an opportunity but lack the funds—this is their chance.”
Mulama noted that Sakaja's manifesto is clear on creating opportunity, adding that the initiative is looking to fulfil that.
Residents interested in the program can register online through the Social Services Department’s link at freeacademy.iyfkenya.org, as explained by Social Services Chief Officer Boniface Nyamu.
Nyamu added that a variety of courses are available, including catering, graphic design, electrical installation, plumbing, computer skills, carpentry, digital marketing and, beauty and hairdressing.
Registration for the program is open until Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at pm.
Selected applicants will have the opportunity to attend training at various Nairobi-based colleges.
Nyamu urged Nairobians to take advantage of the chance to build a brighter future.
The exercise is part of Sakaja's baby "Dishi na County".
So far, public schools in Nairobi receive food on time across all 17 subcounties.
The programme, designed to provide affordable meals to students, has led to the establishment of 17 kitchens countywide, with seven being completed just before the start of the third term.
With the completion of the 17 kitchens, 152 public primary schools and Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers are equipped to offer meals to students at the affordable rate of five shillings per meal.
The Dishi na County Programme, launched in June 2023, began with the establishment of 10 central kitchens, with the first meals served on August 28, 2023.
Over 5,000 workers under the Dishi na County initiative
working in 12 kitchens strategically set in Nairobi prepare meals and transport
to various schools, creating job opportunities for residents.
