Jada Pinkett Smith now claims the late Tupac Shakur proposed to her in 1995 while he was serving time in prison.
Pinkett made the allegations during an interview on Thursday said to be part of the promotional run for her upcoming memoir 'Worthy' which will be out on October 17.
“When I wrote about that in the book and when I had to talk about it, that was probably one of the more painful parts. Seeing him (Tupac) there, the condition that he was in and having to leave him there. He was in bad shape. When he asked me to get married, he was at Rikers Island,” she said.
Jada said she knew at that time that Tupac needed somebody to do time with him, which she said she was "gonna do anyway".
"He didn’t have to marry me to do that. I’m here. He needed a rock. Because of our friendship and everything we had been through together, he just wanted to feel that solidified foundation,” she said.
Jada said she, however, turned down the proposal because she thought Tupac would divorce her immediately after his release.
"I promise you, he would’ve married me and divorced me as soon as he got out. I just think it was the mind state that he was in. He wrote me this long letter and even before Pac went to jail, he was starting to shift in a certain manner, really good,” Pinkett Smith said.
“I think that for him, he just felt like if he could tether himself it’ll keep him on a trajectory. But trust me, he would’ve divorced me."
Jada said that one thing she was sure of is that Tupac would not have wanted her as a wife.
"I know that for a fact but I think just being at Rikers kind of shook him a little,” she said.
Jada and Tupac met back in the '80s at the Baltimore School for the Arts in Maryland.
Their connection was instant and the teens became fast friends.
Jada later married Will Smith in 1997 and the two have two children; Jaden and daughter Willow, plus son Trey, from Smith's previous relationship.
In 2021, the Bad Boys star came out and opened up about his jealousy over the close bond that Tupac shared with his wife.
"In the beginning of our relationship, my mind was tortured by their connection. He triggered the perception of myself as a coward. I hated that I wasn’t what he was in the world and I suffered a raging jealousy. I wanted Jada to look at me like that,” he said.
The American actress, however, on October 11 revealed that she split from actor and musician Will Smith in 2016 and have been living separate lives.
In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Jada said the two have however not legally divorced.
"We did not go public because I think I was not ready yet. We were still trying to figure it out between the two of us how to be in partnership and in regards to how we should present that to people, we hadn't figured that out," she said.
