Miss Rwanda 2022, Divine Nshuti Muheto has been arrested for allegedly committing serious traffic offenses.
The Rwanda National Police (RNP) confirmed the arrest of Muheto according to reports by local media.
Local media outlet The New Times said the incident took place on October 29.
Muheto is facing multiple charges, including driving without a license, driving under the influence of alcohol, damaging public infrastructure, and fleeing the scene of the incident.
“This is not the first time she has been involved in such offenses,” police said in a public statement on social media platform X.
The RNP’s comments underscore the gravity of the situation, highlighting concerns about repeated traffic violations by public figures and the threat they pose to public safety.
According to the RNP, Muheto’s actions have sparked considerable public concern, as they underscore the importance of accountability, especially among prominent figures.
The alleged offenses come at a time when Rwanda is focusing on road safety and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent accidents and protect citizens.
The RNP has reiterated that such violations are not only illegal but also endanger the safety of other road users.
Following her arrest, the police have submitted a file detailing Muheto’s offenses to the prosecution for further legal action.
Muheto’s arrest signals broader enforcement of Rwanda’s traffic regulations, particularly with high-profile cases.
Muheto was crowned Miss Rwanda on March 19, 2022, after succeeding Grace Ingabire.
She has been a public figure representing Rwandan youth and the country’s values of beauty, intelligence, and leadership.
However, this incident has led to mixed reactions from the public, with some expressing disappointment that a role model would be implicated in repeated traffic offenses.
As the legal process moves forward, the RNP has reiterated its commitment to maintaining road safety and enforcing traffic regulations.
The case has prompted discussions on social media about the role of public figures in setting positive examples for society and the responsibilities that accompany such status.
