The day I quit the bachelors’ club

‘Till death do us part’? Even when one cheats, infects you and plunders savings?
In Summary
Diary,
People keep asking me what I have against an institution that brings so much happiness to so many people. Well, that’s not true. I have nothing against Habitat for Humanity. Who would be against an institution that builds affordable housing for families in need?
As for those of you who would be referring to marriage, now, that’s a whole other different kettle to boil. You see, I don’t like cucumbers or cod liver oil. But I wasn’t born hating these two foul foods. I had to learn to abhor them by first tasting them, and then throwing up, especially in the case of the fish oil. They even tried putting flavour in it but it’s still a no-sell for me. I wouldn’t chew a turd if it was infused with vanilla.
But I digress. In case you’re wondering, no, I didn’t have to try marriage to hate it. The bad dates I go on are enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Another major reason is, nothing ends well that starts on a lie. If that worked, I’d never tell my patients that they’re suffering from a terminal illness. I owe them the truth.
Shouldn’t it be the same with the oath of matrimony? In sickness and in health? For rich or for poor? Till death do us part? Really?
A scenario comes to mind. Husband tells his wife, “Honey, I have to tell you something. I succumbed to a moment of weakness and made a bad decision. Long story short, Julie gave me the clap and I just gave it to you.”
“I can’t believe this,” says the wife, seething with rage. “I’m leaving you.”
“But you can’t, honey. In sickness and in health, remember?”
“Well,” sighs the wife, “I could stay if we had any money left to get treatment.”
“What do you mean? We still have our savings, don’t we?”
“Uhm… about that. I tried to multiply it playing Aviator and, well, you can guess the rest.”
The problem is, neither of them is allowed to clobber the other to death. Based on their oaths in front of a priest and their families and friends, they would have to curl in bed and wait for the Grim Reaper to part them.
Which begs the question, why make promises you know quite well you are incapable of keeping?
