New York City is expecting to see its first impactful winter storm of the season

A normal human body has a temperature range that generates heat during cold hours.

Body fat stores extra calories whereas brown fat consumes the calories and releases them as heat energy.

Brown fat stores energy and burns that energy to regulate your body temperature.

If people are physically fit, this also makes it a lot easier for them to cope with the cold weather.

If heating your body is not an option, there are some other simple tips you can try.

It's important to dress in layers of warm clothing, with an outer layer that is wind-resistant.

Cover all exposed skin, wear a hat, mittens or insulated gloves, a scarf, neck tube or face  mask, waterproof footwear, thick or woolly socks, and long underwear

If you have mild low body temperatures, you will shiver. But if you have a moderate body temperature, you may not.

Your body will stop shivering when the muscle contractions are no longer effective when producing heat.

Shivering is like a warning sign that you need to warm yourself up and fast.

Shivering starts when your skin temperature drops preventing your core temperature from dropping too low.

By consuming calories, your muscles contract and relax so that heat is generated to replace the heat your body has lost.

When indoors you are advised to cover yourself with blankets to control the body temperature without altering room temperature.

If outdoors, you can also keep additional blankets nearby, so it’s easy to add additional layers at night as needed.

For added warmth and coziness, you should also consider swapping out your summer linens for flannel sheets.

If you consume more calories your body will be able to handle the cold better.

Therefore it is advisable to take hot tea, any hot beverage, and hot water with lemon to prevent one from getting a cold.

Feeding well aids the body to keep blood sugar up enough to provide the energy you need.

Staying hydrated is important because your body will be able to stand the cold.

It is important to stay protected during this cold season as cold weather can affect your health.
