Prisons seek to build on Kenya's Cup of Nations success at world show

After a successful conclusion on the Africa Cup of Nations, Kenya Prisons are now focused on the FIVB women’s World Club Championships set for October 7-14 in Zurich, Switzerland.

Kenya won the Africa Cup of Nations with a clean record after beating Egypt, Algeria, Cameroon, Senegal and Tunisia. It is from the success of the tournament that Prisons are hoping to peg their prospects at the world show, where they have failed to click despite ruling the continental front. The team is currently training at Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.

Coach David Lung’aho is expected to unveil his final squad of 12 players at the training venue early next week.

Meanwhile African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) has announced full programme for zonal phase (second round) of 2014 FIVB World Championship African qualifiers.

The qualification round will be held during in October and November, 2013. Rwanda will host Zone Five men’s tournament from November 25 to December 1 where they fight against Egypt, Burundi, Kenya and Uganda. Uganda on the other hand will play host to the women’s tournament between October 16 and 20 with Kenya, Egypt, and Tanzania fighting for two places in the final round.

Elsewhere, this year’s edition of Savlon volleyball league serves off tomorrow at Eastleigh High School in Nairobi. Moses Mbuthia, the KVF Nairobi branch treasurer, said the competition starts with school and colleges category. The tournament involves non-league playing team with the view of giving players an opportunity to market themselves to potential clubs.

KVF are also preparing the national u-23 team which will feature at the World Championships set for Tijuana, Mexico between October 3 and 14.

A final team of 12 players, led by coach Sammy Mulinge is currently training at Kasarani ahead of their departure for the South American nation on October 2.

This will be the inaugural event, aimed at providing an opportunity to age-group players to participate in an international tournament with the goal of reducing the gap between age-group and senior level volleyball. There will be 12 participants per gender, which will be filled by two countries from each continent.
