Okumu, Mungai join City Stars as transfer window concludes

City Stars emerged NSL champions to return to the top tier league.

Nairobi City Stars concluded their transfer with the signing of roving winger Rodgers Okumu and left-back Herit Mungai from National Super League side Coast Stima as the transfer window ended on Friday.

 Okumu aka Okuse signed a two-year contract with the Kenyan Premier League returnees after training with Simba wa Nairobi for two weeks.

“To scale my football upwards, I decided to move out of my comfort zone. It’s a blessing to join City Stars and I am happy to be part of the team. I want to work hard and help the team achieve its goals,” said the fleet-footed Okumu who operates on either wings.

Team coordinator Samson Otieno revealed the connection that finally landed Okumu at City Stars.

“During our game against Coast Stima at Camp Toyoyo, Okumu was top of his game against us. He scored once and had two assists. From then on, our scouts monitored all his games and were convinced he will be a good addition. We are glad that, after negotiations, Coast Stima agreed to cut short his contract for him to join us. We thank them for their consideration and we hereby welcome Okumu to City Stars,” Otieno told the club’s official website.

In joining City Stars, Okumu ended a five-year stay at Coast Stima. He will wear jersey No. 13.

Mungai, who previously played for Posta Rangers and Kariobangi Sharks, can play as a left back as well as left winger. He signed a one-year contract.

On receiving Mungai, Otieno said: “Herit hands the coach good options on the left, both at the back and further up. He is a quality player and on behalf of City Stars, we welcome him on board. With his arrival, City Stars has officially closed transfer activities in the current window.”

Mungai said: “It feels great to join City Stars as the club has been my dream team since I was a young lad.” He will wear jersey number 28.

The two join other new signings including midfielders Rowland Makati (Vapor Sports), Ronney Kola Oyaro (Kenya School of Government) and Timothy Ouma (Laiser Hill), defenders Kenedy Onyango (Kakamega Homeboyz) and Yusuf Mukisa Lubowa (Proline FC – Uganda), goalkeepers Steve Njunge Ndungu (Wazito FC) and Elvis Ochoro (Hakati Sportiff).
