Mwira Girls, Mabunge Boys and Indangalasia Boys are among the teams who registered victories as the Western Region secondary school games kicked off at the St. Peters Mumias High School in Kakamega County on Thursday.

Sigalame and Eregi, Bungoma High, St Peters and Tigoi also raked up victories to keep their hunt for titles on course.

Three quick first-half goals guided debutants Mwira from Kakamega County past St Joseph’s Chakol from Busia in their Pool 'A' opening match.

Captain Charity Huku opened the scoring just 10 minutes into the match before Phewnic Wamalwa doubled the score eight minutes later as Becky Nyongesa sealed the win.

Mwira captain Huku said: “Our target is to play at the national championships in Nakuru. This is our first time to play at the regionals and a slot at the nationals will be a perfect reward."

Head coach Rajab Juma added: “This is the first time we are playing under 20 at the regionals but we had a good under 16 team in 2019 and the transition has been good. We have great talent."

Mabunge Boys surprised hosts Mwitoti, the Kakamega County champions, who eliminated football giants Kakamega Boys.

Geoffrey Wesonga scored the solitary goal for Mabunge in the Pool 'A' encounter.

In basketball, Tigoi and hosts St Peters Mumias were the biggest winners, triumphing against Bumala and Senende in girls' and boys' competitions respectively.

The noisy hosts were 59-35 winners over Senende while Tigoi mercilessly thrashed Bumala 98-03 with Mercy Obare bagging 12 points for the winners.

In other basketball results, Eregi beat Misikhu 36-27 in the girls' competition while Bungoma High were 43-38 winners over Butula. Bunyore beat Khasoko 32-20.

Indangalasia Boys came from a set down to down reigning national volleyball bronze medallists Namwela Boys 3-1 (19-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-14).

Sigalame beat Mbale in straight sets of 25-23, 25-21, 25-15.

In handball, Bungoma’s Toroso Girls were 19-8 winners over Mudavadi Girls from Vihiga County.
