Olympian Emily Muteti will spearhead Team Kenya's quest for medals at the World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan from July 14-30.

Muteti will partner Maria Brunlehner in the girls' category while Monyo Maina and Ridwan Abubakar will represent the boys.

The World Championship involves diving, artistic water swimming, open water, water polo, swimming, and high diving.

The quartet was chosen following a two-day trial held at the Kasarani Aquatic Centre. Muteti said the next six weeks will be key as they step up training for the championships.

“We are looking forward to the championship following the trials and we will train hard to ensure we qualify for the finals of our respective events and do the country proud,” added Muteti.

Muteti, who is based at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix USA, said the swimming standards in the USA have really improved her performance.

"My performances have improved tremendously alongside the coaching team at the university and I am looking forward to the world event," he said.

Brunhlener last represented the country at the World Aquatics Championships in 2019 in South Korea.

“It's been a three-year wait to represent the country and I am delighted to have done well in the trials. I look forward to competing with the world's best,” she added.

Elsewhere, Alliance Girls will host a swimming gala in July dubbed 'Bush Gala'.

The event will bring together swimmers from both primary and secondary schools in a bid to promote the development of the sport in Kiambu County.

According to organisers led by Kenya Swimming Federation (KSF) Kiambu County Executive Committee member Joseph Ndung’u, the gala will act as a platform to spot talent and subsequently have them properly nurtured through structures being put in place by the Mt Kenya stakeholders of the game.

“The gala will be used to spot talent in a bid to get the best swimmers in the region as the best three girls in the primary school category will get an opportunity to join Form 1 at Alliance Girls and Alliance Boys for the best three boys. The best swimmers in the secondary category will get a scholarship at Strathmore University,” he revealed.

According to KSF Kiambu County chairman Stanley Kaberu, the move by Alliance Girls to host the gala underscores the region’s commitment to boosting the growth of swimming in both private and public institutions.
