Seven lady players to fly Kenyan flag in Zimbabwe show

Seven ladies will fly the Kenyan flag at this year’s Gilberson & Paige Championship set for July 8-13 in Zimbabwe. 

Agnes Nyakio, Mercy Nyanchama and junior Chanelle Wangari—all from VetLab are in the team alongside Golf Park’s pair of Faith Ontune and Nancy Wairimu, Serah Khanyereri (Royal Nairobi) and Joyce Wanjiru (Kiambu).

While handing over the flag to the team on Tuesday morning, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba told the players to ensure they represent the country well in the event 

“You have our blessings as a country and I want you to represent us very well,” said Namwamba. Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) chairperson Lydia Obonyo will accompany the team.

Elsewhere, the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) chairman Philip Ochola has urged golf clubs in the country to strengthen their junior programs and ensure players feature in the regional series.

Speaking in Kakamega over the weekend during the Goldfields Trophy,  where Kiambu’s Elvis Muiga won the title, Ochola said there is a need to grow the junior section for the purposes of growth.

“I want clubs in the country to embrace junior players and compete in various events. We need the sport to grow and the growth on how many juniors we enroll," said Ochola.
