Equity Bank will shoot to the top of the Kenya Handball Federation league should they win their two matches at Nyayo Stadium this weekend.

The bankers, joint top with giants National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), Ulinzi and General Service Unit (GSU) with 10 points all from five matches, play Desert Scorpions on Saturday and Nanyuki the following day.

Equity Bank coach Peter Mwathi, who ended his tenure at Strathmore University earlier this month, said the two matches are of importance but will take each match at a time.

Maximum points will push Equity to the top of the table with 14.

“It’s been so good so far, especially after our wins over Strathmore University and Black Mamba,” said Mwathi, adding: “We have done a lot on conditioning, strictly following the program as instructed by our strength and conditioning coach.”

The other matches on the card will see an all-newcomers clash pitting Hunters against Nanyuki, Young City confront Buccaneers and Spartans face Daystar University.

In the women's league, sixth-placed Amazons, 40-16 losers to champions Nairobi Water last week, meet Meldone Akoth’s Daystar University. Bottom-placed New Hope tackle National Youth Service (NYS), who are fourth.

On Sunday, men's leaders Ulinzi turn their guns on Hunters while GSU, currently in fourth place, battle Young City.

The paramilitary side's captain, Raphael Chege, said they don’t take any team for granted but are ever ready for the opposition.

“We have only trained for the last three days due to work engagements but we are fit and only need just a bit of ball work. We are ready for our opponents,” said Chege.

Buccaneers, whose goal-getter Randy Ochieng is enjoying top form — having buried 31 goals in two games last week — will have their hands full again as they play Daystar University and Black Mamba.

Daystar University, who have managed just one point from their five matches, have a chance to grab their first win of the season against New Hope.
