Universities introduce new games in line with CBC

The new games include American football, korfball, lacrosse, Frisbee, and softball.

The Kenya Universities Sports Federation has introduced new sportis disciplines in their calendar in line with the Competency-Based Curriculum.

The new games include American football, korfball, lacrosse, frisbee, and softball. The games will also be introduced in junior and secondary schools.

Kenya University Sports Association (KUSA) Western Conference Secretary-General Abraham Ong’ong’a on Tuesday said they have started training clinics for captains and coaches.

 “The American football clinic will take place at Great Lakes University of Kenya. This year, the games will be held as a demonstration, and we shall work with the respective federations to train our coaches. The Western conference, however, introduced frisbee two years ago,” said Ong’ong’a.

At the same time, the KUSA Western Conference 2023/24 calendar has been released.

The first event of the calendar will be staged on Saturday and Sunday at the Great Lakes University in Kisumu County.

The 10 universities from the region will battle it for titles in chess, cross country, scrabble, frisbee, and rugby 7’s.

Kisii University games tutor David Obungu said: “We want to defend our rugby men’s 7’s and chess titles. We lost the men’s cross country title to MMUST but we intend to reclaim it,” said Obungu.

Kibabii University will host the second event on October 14 - 15. The event will feature karate, taekwondo, table tennis, lawn tennis, and badminton while the third event will be held at Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology on October 28 - 29. The teams will compete in hockey (men), volleyball (women), basketball (women) and swimming.

Action will then move to Kaimosi Friends University on November 11 - 12 where the teams will contest for trophies in basketball (men), hockey (women), roll ball, and softball (exhibition).

Maseno University will host a national open tournament for the disabled on November 25 - 26, the last event of the year.

Cluster football games for both men and women will be held on January 20-21, next year at Rongo, Kibabii and Tom Mboya universities.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology will stage track and field events, 3x3 basketball, tug of war, and darts on January 27 and 28.

Volleyball (men), handball (women), and football (men) playoffs will be held at Rongo University while korfball, lacrosse, and women's football playoffs will be held at Kabianga University on March 2-3.

Kisii University will host the penultimate event on the calendar on March 16-17 featuring handball (men), handball (women), and American football (demonstration).

Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology will host the Kenya Universities Sports Federation national Zone 'B' playoffs on March 29-30.
