Over 500 swimmers are expected to grace the Kenya Aquatic Time Trial this weekend at  Moi Stadium, Kasarani.

Kenya Aquatics vice president,  Stanley Kaberu, said eight counties will send swimmers to the two-day championship.

The event will see swimmers qualify for this month's CANA Zone 3 Championships in Rwanda, the Africa Junior Championships in  Mauritius, and the World Short Course Championship set for Doha in February

The counties participating include Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, Machakos, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu and Nyeri. Kaberu said he expects competitive action with slots up for grabs.

"Swimmers know what's at stake and they are ready to compete and gain selection for the international assignments," said Kaberu.

He added that they have started engaging the Ministry of Sports for funding, especially for the CANA Zone 3 Championships in Rwanda.

"We are looking at sending 48 swimmers and hopefully get funding from the ministry. We know the event has come soon but we will see what we can get from the ministry for the event,” added Kaberu.

He said with the lifting of the suspension by World Aquatics,  Kenyan swimmers and coaches can be eligible to get swimming grants and scholarships which were suspended in 2021.

The swimmers had lost millions of shillings in terms of grants and scholarships and Kaberu is hopeful the World Aquatics will release them soon.

"The last three years have been rough for our swimmers. They have lost opportunities due to the wrangles but with the office in place, we hope the grants will resume soon," he noted,

The Kiambu swimming county chairman said following the wrangles in the last couple of years, the country lost a generation of swimmers.

"It is sad we have lost several swimmers who gave up on the sport but as a federation, we must nurture and build a crop of swimmers who will do our country proud."
