KCB coach Japheth Munala believes victory in the opening match in the first leg of the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) national league is a morale booster as they seek to defend the national women's title.

The women's league champions beat Post Bank 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-19) in a 'battle of bankers' at the Koitaleel Samoei University in Mosoriot, Nandi County.

They play the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) today in another tricky affair. Munala said it was a good start for the girls on their way to defending the national title later in the season.

“The win is a morale booster for the team. We are optimistic of good results here and subsequent events," he noted.

Munala, who is also Malkia Strikers' tactician, said they have to prepare well as they face a tough DCI on Friday.

“Today’s win has given us an upper hand as we prepare to face DCI tomorrow. We want to leave this place with a maximum of six points,” he added.

Elsewhere,  Kenya Prisons equally started on a winning note, beating Nairobi Prison in straight sets of 14-25, 14- 25 and 22- 25.

Kenya Prisons coach Josp Barasa said winning the opening match was a good sign for them as they target to finish in the top two positions.

“Last season, we managed to finish third but this time, we want the top two positions as we seek to reclaim our lost glory,” said Barasa. In another women's match, DCI shone over debutant Maranatha.

In the men's category, champions Kenya Prisons were too good for their Rift Valley counterparts, beating them 25-17,  25-12, and 25-17.

Former champions General Service Unit (GSU) defeated the Department of Defence (DOD) 25-23, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-17 in a four-set thriller.
