Kaimosi Friends University (KAFU) will this weekend host the last event of the Kenya Universities Sports Association (KUSA) Western Conference games.

The 10 universities in the region will battle it out in men’s basketball, women’s hockey, men's and women’s roll ball while newly introduced softball will be held as a demonstration sport.

Kisii University’s sports tutor, David Obungu, vowed to reclaim basketball and hockey titles.

“Our roll ball teams play in the national leagues which gives us an edge over our rivals.  I’m confident we will bag the two titles. This will be the first time for the universities to compete in roll ball since introduction,” said Obungu.

He said the men’s basketball team which features in the Kenya Basketball Federation’s (KBF) Division Two league is equally a sure bet.

“Two weeks ago, we bagged the women’s title after a 30-17 victory over Masinde Murilo University of Science Technology (MMUST). They are our main rivals but we hope to complete a double on them,” noted Obungu.

He added: “Last year, we lost the volleyball title to Maseno but we want to reclaim it. Our women’s hockey team will face a tough task against MMUST.”

MMUST are, however, favourite to lift the title following the return of twins Alice and Maureen Owiti who were part of Kenya’s team to the  Olympic qualifiers in South Africa.

After this weekend’s event, KUSA Western Conference action will resume on January 20 and 21 when Rongo, Tom Mboya, and Kibabii will host cluster soccer games for men and women.

The track and field, basketball, tug of war, 3x3 basketball, and darts will be held at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology will be held on January 27 and 28.

After the cluster soccer games, Rongo University will stage men’s volleyball, women’s handball, and men’s soccer playoffs on February 10 and 11 while the University of Kabianga will host korfball, lacrosse, and women’s soccer playoff on March 2 and 3.

The penultimate event will be held at Kisii University on March 16 and 17 and it will feature men’s handball, women’s netball, and American football. MMUST will host the Kenya Universities Sports Federation play-off from March 29-31.
