Kenya Sevens rugby team Shujaa win the Safari 7s

Fresh from winning the Safari Sevens, Shujaa will face Speranza 22, R10C Selects and Wailers in Pool C of the Dubai Invitational Sevens tournament next week.

Kevin Wambua's charges will be full of confidence having bagged their second trophy in three months.

They bagged the Africa Sevens crown in September in Zimbabwe, where they qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Speaking Thursday Assistant, coach Louis Kisia said they are relishing the challenge of playing top-quality teams in Dubai.

“Our mantra for the team is one game at a time. The boys are full of confidence and we are aware of the quality of the teams we will face in Dubai. I believe we will be tested accordingly which will be good as we prepare for the Challenger Series in the new year,” added Kisia.

He said he was encouraged by the performance of some of the players in Morans' outfit that finished fifth including speedster Floyd Wabwire, Gabriel Ayimba, Barnabas Owuor, Chrisant Ojwang, and Ben Salem Odoyo.

“The five played superbly well and if they can keep that trajectory they won't be far from challenging the players in the Shujaa side. It's also healthy for our Sevens depth that we have good players in both teams that played at the Safari Sevens,” said Kisia

The Strathmore Leos head coach said Morans' major undoing in the tournament was lack of experience at the highest level.

“A good number of players were playing at the stage for the first time so they were exposed but credit to them. They bounced back to finish fifth."

The team is expected to be named early next week before departing to Dubai.

The Kenya Lionesses will also be in the Arabian Gulf and are in Pool B alongside Ireland Invitational, USA Falcons, Rhino Stampers, and French Militaire Sevens.

Head coach Dennis Mwanja said he has a full squad to choose from with no injuries after the Safari Sevens, where they finished second after losing to Uganda in the final.

Stella Wafula, Judith Okumu,  Sharon Auma, Christabel Lindo, and Janet Okello are expected to be available for the trip to Dubai. The five were in South Africa playing at the Extreme 10's tournament last weekend.
