Eight swimming clubs have confirmed participation in the Kiambu Masters Championship slated for Saturday at Porterhouse School.

The event, which is open to all swimmers over the age of 25 years, has attracted over 150 swimmers.

Among the notable teams that have already confirmed participation are Harpoons, Peponi School, USIU Staff, Genesis Sports, Braeburn, Porterhouse, Seahorses Aquatics, and Supermarlins.

Kenya Aquatics vice-president, Stanley Kaberu, said they have seen the growth of masters swimming in the country and he cited the Nairobi County Aquatics Association NCAA Level 3 Championship, the Kenya Inter Bank Championship, and the Africa Aquatics Zone 3 held in Kigali, Rwanda.

Kaberu said the new development aligns with Kenya Aquatics’ recent initiative to revitalise masters swimming and encourage senior swimmers to return to the pool and promote the sport.

“The federation has also announced plans to host a National Masters Championship next year and is in the process of establishing a national database for masters swimmers,” added Kaberu.

Kaberu cited the performance of master swimmers like Nasser Motha and Fahad Bayusuf at the just concluded Africa Aquatics in Kigali, Rwanda, as a pointer to great things to come.

The performance from our swimmers especially those over 25 was credible and we need to build on it for future performances at the regional and international level,” said Kaberu. Other top masters swimmers to grace the one-day event include—Jacqie Macharia, Ann Obure, and Anthony Muriithi.

Elsewhere, the East African Chipkizi Championship is set to make waves at Braeburn, Arusha from December 16-17.

Renowned Kenyan teams, including Umoja Sharks, Pioneer School, Woodcreek School, Supermarlins, Porterhouse School, Makini Sports Academy, Juja Prep, and Dashing Dolphins, have confirmed participation. Also in the mix are Tanzania’s — Morogoro, Tanga, Moshi and Arusha.
