Homa Bay Combined beat Kisumu Combined 4- 2 on penalties after a barren draw in regulation time to win the Eliud Owalo Super Cup at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu on Thursday.
The teams created several chances but failed to find the back of the net during the thrilling match sponsored by the Eliud Owalo Foundation.
Homa Bay's goalkeeper Bernard Onunga saved Kisumu's Enegi Abubakar penalty before his teammate Christopher Raila shot wide.
Kisumu's Ochwari Alex and Vincent Wanga were the only players who converted their penalties.
Brian Ochieng, Enosh Ochieng, Captain Yusuf Mohammed, and Joseph Onono—all scored their penalties for Homa Bay.
The win saw Homa Bay walk away with Sh 400,000 and a trophy with Kisumu Combined settling for Sh300,000.
In the third/ fourth playoff match, Siaya Combined beat Migori Combined 2-1 in an entertaining match at the same venue.
George Odhiambo of Migori was on target barely eight minutes into the match after dribbling through the Siaya defence following a pass from Sisie Onyango.
Siaya drew level after John Omondi slotted the ball past advancing Migori's keeper Junior Odhiambo two minutes before halftime.
Vincent Othuondo sealed Siaya's win in the 76th minute after completing a free-kick from Omondi, who was fouled just outside the box.
Migori had been reduced to 10 men three minutes before Siaya's second goal after their captain was handed a red card in the 73rd minute. Siaya took home Sh200,000 while Migori received Sh 100,000.
The tournament will see the best players selected from all four teams— Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay and Migori— to form Nyanza Combined.
Nyanza Combined will play Gor Mahia in a friendly match at Nyilima grounds in Rarieda in Siaya County on Saturday.
Owalo, who graced the match on Wednesday, said the tournament targets to help nurture and develop young talent in the region.
He said the initiative aims to revamp football standards among youth in line with the Kenya Kwanza Government agenda.
The tournament is a response to the declining soccer standards in the region and the growing vulnerability of youth to issues such as drug abuse, alcoholism, crime, and immorality.
Owalo said the event provides a vital avenue for youth engagement, character building, income generation, and the creation of new opportunities.
