Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba heaped praise on the Kenya Rugby Union management after the Sevens team alias Shujaa won the Dubai Challenger Series on Sunday.

Shujaa beat Chile 12-5 in the final, to mark a dream start to the second-tier series that is used for promotion to the World Rugby Sevens Series.

"Congratulations @OfficialKRU for this promising start of the long journey back to the top table of World Rugby," Ababu posted on his X platform

"Kenya has huge potential in sports, especially with the transformative TalantaHela."

Sasha Mutai was elected the new KRU chairman in March last year and has his work cut out to ensure Shujaa, who won the World Series in 2016, in Singapore, returns to the main competition.

Mutai replaced Oduor Gangla who chose not to defend his seat despite the union's constitution not restricting him.

It was double glory for Kenya as Agnes Ngetich obliterated the women’s world 10km record by running 28:46 at the 10K Valencia Ibercaja, a World Athletics Label road race, on Sunday morning.

The 22-year-old became the first woman to break 29 minutes for the distance, improving by 28 seconds the previous road mixed-race world record set by Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw in Castellon two years ago.

"Stepped out of church this blessed sunny Sunday to the beautiful news of Agnes Ngetich smashing the World Record in the 10km Road Race in Valencia Spain. I have spoken with Agnes on the phone to congratulate her on this superb feat. The Whole of Kenya is proud of you Agie. Hongera!," Namwamba added.
