Cabinet Secretary for Sports Ababu Namwamba has promised government support in reshaping motorsports.

“Motorsports in Kenya has a bright future and we are keen on amplifying government presence in the sport,” the CS said.

However, Namwamba observed that the government cannot undertake every aspect of the sport and thus called on corporate companies to lend a hand.

Speaking during the annual Kenya Motorsports Sports Federation award gala, Namwamba observed: “We cannot continue savouring bragging rights of hosting the toughest and most popular WRC event in the world (Safari Rally) yet our local rally championship is not robust."

"I want to call on sponsors and well-wishers to partner with us in ensuring that we regain the longstanding glory that the sport has presented for donkey years,” he noted.

The late Jim Heather-Hayes was feted, though post-humously, for his contribution to the sport. Hayes, considered one of the greatest legends in the sport, passed away in 2022.

He is remembered for finishing sixth at the 1990 Safari Rally.
