The highly anticipated Rift Valley Region Secondary Schools Sports Association Term One School Games have been postponed to allow hosts Kapsabet Boys time to mourn their loved ones.

The regional games were set to kick off on Tuesday morning at the Kapsbet Boys grounds in Nandi County.

A tragic accident that occurred on Saturday involving the Kapsabet Boys School bus killed a student and a teacher with many sustaining serious injuries.

The school Principal Kipchumba Maiyo serves as the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) chairman.

Rift Valley region chairman Patrick Kipkenda confirmed the games earlier scheduled to start on Tuesday morning to Saturday have been moved and will start on Saturday to end on Wednesday next week.

“This was tragic and we have to be humane enough to allow students and teachers to mourn some of their own. Due to this, we have postponed the championships from Tuesday to Saturday. The arrival date for participants is  Saturday with the event starting on Sunday to Tuesday at the same venue," said Kipkenda.

Kipkenda said it was prudent to give time to the students to heal.

At the same time, Hill School Girls’ hockey coach Caroline Terer, representing Uasin Gishu County, has set a target to qualify for the nationals set for next month in Machakos.

Terer said they have what it takes this time round to reach the nationals after many years of trying.

“We have been competing in the region for the last four years but we have never gone past that,” said Terer.  Hill School will take on Ndururumo from Laikipia and Maasai Girls of Narok in Pool C.
