Kenya’s Janeth Chepngetich clocked 33:37.00 minutes to win the women’s 10,000m as the athletics programme entered Day 4 at the Ghana University Stadium.
Ethiopia occupied the next three places as Belew Kefale (33:38.37) and Tekan Behre (33:51.50) took silver and bronze respectively. Another Ethiopian Ayana Mulisa (34:45.37) closed the top four places.
Chepngetich, who was the only Kenyan in the field, battled off a full-strength team from Ethiopia to reign supreme.
She first dealt with Behre and Mulisa in the first 300 kilometres of the final lap before engaging Kefale in a sprint finish in the final stretch.
Samuel Chege clocked 21.14 seconds to qualify for the final. Malawi’s Stern Noel clocked 21.45 to finish second while Benin’s Jerome Kounnou was third timed at 21.67. Uganda’s Allan Gobi returned 21.67 to place third.
