Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has reiterated the government’s commitment to support Team Kenya’s medal haul at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The CS made the remarks on Wednesday after leading a government delegation in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Olympic Committee of Kenya.
Namwamba said the pact is meant to solidify the cooperation between the government and NOCK in preparing for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics.
“We only have 30 days left to the event and I’d like to assure Team Kenya of the government’s full support,” he remarked.
“We will ensure Kenyan athletes are well-prepared to compete on the world’s grandest stage,” he added.
He also reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicate the doping menace in the country.
He urged Kenyan athletes to conserve Kenya’s hard-earned glory as a global force by winning honourably.
“We have made it clear our zero-tolerance to doping mantra. We want to preserve our proud heritage and pedigree as a global athletics powerhouse that runs and wins clean,” Namwamba stated.
“I wish to extol Adak Kenya for their vigilance in ensuring that Kenya sends a clean team to the Olympics,” he added.
Meanwhile, Namwamba wished the Kenya Para Boxing team a successful outing at the Seven Stars para boxing competition in Poland on June 29.
The para boxers have been punching furiously on the bag to sharpen their talons at their non-residential training camp in Shauri Moyo, Nairobi.
The Kenya Adaptive Para Boxing Federation chairperson Mary Olongo said she was excited after the Kenyan team landed an invitation to participate in Poland. “Participating in a host of competitions abroad will expose our athletes and solidify their performance on the international stage,” Olongo stated.
“We need to grace this kind of international event more frequently to enhance the quality of our para boxers better. Our goal is to have boxers qualifying for bigger events like the Commonwealth and Olympic Games,” she added.
She thanked Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba for rallying behind the team, adding that support from the government was instrumental in steering the team to the desired heights.
“Kenya will soon have para boxers bagging medals at international events if we continue to get the required support,” Olongo stated.
She said the team will strive to honour two more international events set aside for this season.
