Twenty-year-old Elvis Muigua will be hoping to return to the summit of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) series when he tees off today at the Goldfields Trophy at the par 72 Kakamega Golf Club.

The Kiambu golfer is hoping to defend the title he won last year in the elite amateur golf tournament.

“My target this time is to retain my title and go top of the standings after losing two weeks ago,” said Muigua.

A fortnight ago, Kenya captain John Lejirma toppled Muigua from the KAGC standing following his victory at the Ruiru Open.

However, Muigua’s victory in Kakamega will hand him a top position as the KAGC title race hots up.

“I have undergone intensive training and I want to defend my title and reclaim the top spot. Kakamega has always favoured me and I hope to prevail,” he said.

The three-day event starts today with round one and ends on Sunday with a 54-hole event, where the top 36 golfers are expected to make the cut on Saturday to qualify for Sunday’s final.

Last year, Muigua fired an incredible six over par 222 to edge out then defending champion Lejirma who was disqualified from the tournament in the first round.

“I played well in the last round after being inspired by my big brother Michael Karanga. He told me to give my best,” said Muigua after winning.

Ugandan Godfrey Nsubuga tied in second position with Nandi Bear’s Elly Barno on (+12) 228 in the three-day 54-hole tourney.

Lejirma tiptoed Muigua to the summit at the Ruiru Open two weeks ago when he fired a total of 13 under par 206.
