Naivas to face Sofapaka in KPL promotion playoff

Naivas booked a play-off slot on the last day of the season after a hard-fought 1-0 win over SS Assad at Ukunda Showground in Kwale County.

Naivas will face 2009 Kenyan Premier League champions Sofapaka in the promotion/relegation playoff.

The playoff will determine the final Premier League slot.

Naivas booked a play-off slot on the last day of the season after a hard-fought 1-0 win over SS Assad at Ukunda Showground in Kwale County. Francis Nambute scored the all-important goal.

Sofapaka finished 16th in the FKF Premier League while Naivas finished third in the National Super League with 76 points, just a point better than Nairobi United at fourth.

United thrashed relegated Silibwet Leons 7-0 in Bomet.  

The first leg of the NSL/KPL playoff will be on Saturday with the second scheduled for July 14. The draw to determine which team will host the first leg is on Tuesday.

NSL champions Mara Sugar suffered a shock 2-1 loss against Vihiga Bullets on their coronation day. Mathare United concluded their season the second-tier league with a 2-0 win over Mombasa Stars.

Mara Sugar and Mathare United booked automatic slots in the top-tier league.

Mara Sugar coach, Benedict Wanjala, said: “We will review the season ahead of our Premier League debut. We shall strengthen the team before the season starts."

Darajani Gogo edged Mully Children’s Family (MCF) 3-0 while Kajiado FC were relegated to Division One after suffering a 2-0 loss to Gusii FC at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho. Joshua Chabicha scored both goals.

Kajiado join Leons and Gusii in Division One next season.

Fortune Sacco, Administration Police Service (APS) Bomet and 3K FC will feature in next season’s NSL.
