More than 100 teams have confirmed participation in the third edition of the Machakos Mega Open tournament.

The tournament will take place on Saturday and Sunday at various venues in Machakos, according to the tournament’s organising secretary Brian Were.

The venues include Machakos University, Machakos Teachers College, Machakos Academy and Scott Christian University.

The first and second editions featured handball (men and women). However, this year’s event will feature football, hockey, basketball, volleyball, rugby 7s, netball and indoor games.

“The first and second editions were hugely successful and that is why we decided to expand and include other disciplines,” he said.

National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) won the men’s handball title last year while the women’s trophy went to Legend Queens.

Were said teams have until Thursday to confirm participation. The registration fee is Sh2500 for clubs and Sh2,000 for secondary schools.

“So far, 23 teams have registered for men’s handball and 10 in the women’s category. We expect more teams to confirm their participation before the deadline. We have a variety of teams which include institutions of higher learning, clubs featuring in various leagues, secondary schools and amateur teams,” said Were.

The tournament is sponsored by Shalom Community Hospital, Coca-Cola, Kenya Commercial Bank and Chocolate City. Were added that winners will receive trophies, medals and certificates.
