Kenya is gearing up for the 2024 World Masters Hockey scheduled for  October 11-21 in Cape Town.

Team Kenya Masters Hockey Selection Committee chairperson John Fernandes said they are hoping to pick a team of 25 players from 11 clubs around the country.

He said Kenya will be represented by men's teams in the over-40, over-55 and over-65 categories subject to the availability of funds.

“We are confident of raising three teams of 25 players from the 11 clubs around the country. We will also have seven officials accompanying the team.”

The event has also attracted Australia, England, France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, USA and hosts South Africa, who will field both men and women in the over-35, over-40, over-65, over-70 and over-75 cadres.

“The Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) have supported us big time but we will need to be at our best to compete against teams like Australia and  Netherlands, who have a rich history in the game and skilful players," Fernandes said.

He said while funds will be a bit of a challenge, they have approached probable sponsors who look promising.

He said they have been training since January but will from this month increase the sessions to twice weekly to boost their preparations.

“We've been having friendly matches with different Masters and league teams and we have mainly focused on fitness and technical aspects. Our goal is not only to participate but to compete and rekindle the flame that Kenya had in the 1950s,” Fernandes said.

He said they are taking the event very seriously because they are keen to leave a legacy and inspire the upcoming players.

“We hope this event will inspire young players to take up the sport and help grow hockey at the grassroots level and create a lasting legacy,” he noted.

Kenya's finest moment in international hockey was in 1971 when they finished fourth at the World Cup in Barcelona, Spain. He said they hope to have a women's Masters team participate in future.
