Chelsea’s Argentinean international midfielder, Enzo Fernandez faces an investigation from his club after publishing a song containing racist language on his social media.

The video shows Fernandez and some Argentina teammates singing a song, which mocks the black players in the French national team after their success in the Copa America final against Colombia on Sunday.

The song prompted the French Football Federation to denounce the song as racist, while Fernandez’s Chelsea team-mate, Wesley Fofana declared the song to be “uninhibited racism”.

Fernandez has since apologised, saying he was “truly sorry,” and insisting he stands “against discrimination in all forms and apologize for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations.” “That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character,” he insisted.

Nevertheless, Chelsea have confirmed in a statement that it has “instigated an internal disciplinary procedure,” adding “Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable,” as well as saying they “acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology.” There is a possibility that Fifa will also open an investigation, which could lead to an important sanction for the 23-year-old.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has signed a new one-year contract with the club to extend his stay with them until the end of June 2025.

The deal ended any doubts over whether the 38-year-old Croatia international would continue at the club after his midfield companion Toni Kroos decided to retire at the end of the season. It also means that the player, who arrived at Real Madrid from Tottenham in the summer of 2012, will have spent 13 seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
