Batoto Ba Mungu’s January signing Adan Godana is optimistic that the team is set for a resurgence in the 2024/25 season following a lacklustre performance this year.
The 2009 KPL Kenya Premier League champions secured their top-flight status after a 2-0 aggregate win over NSL side, Naivas FC last month in the FKF Premier League promotion playoffs
The 25-year-old midfielder was brought in from ASEC Huruma FC by former head coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno to strengthen the bench. He believes the team has what it takes to return to their former glory.
“Next season, we are focused on positive results. We want to clinch the title,” Godana remarked.
Since their triumphant run in 2009, Sofapaka have not sealed the title with their best finishes coming in 2014 and 2017 where they finished as runners-up to Gor Mahia.
Following the departure of Zico to join all-time KPL champions Gor Mahia FC as an assistant to Brazilian coach Leo Neiva, Batoto Ba Mungu turned to Robert Matano.
Matano was acquired from Tusker FC after his six-year tenure at the Ruaraka-based side came to an end.
Godana emphasised the importance of quickly adapting to the new coach’s style during pre-season. "We are under a new coach now. We have to focus on achieving his objectives through the pre-season to be ready for the 2024/25 season," he added.
Batoto Ba Mungu kicked off their pre-season with an emphatic 8-0 victory over Black Vultures FC on Thursday.
Matano, who led the team to their 2009 title with 59 points, six clear of second-placed Mathare United, is expected to inject his vast knowledge into the struggling side.
"He is a great tactician. There is no doubt he will steer us to good results in the upcoming season. All we have to do is follow his game plan," Godana said.
Following his appointment, Matano reiterated his desire to take the club back to the glory days. “We want to bring up the team because it has been struggling,” he stated.
Matano's impressive resume includes guiding Tusker to the 2012, 2020/21, and 2021/22 Premier League titles as well as guiding them to the Kenya Super Cup in 2021/22. He secured the FKF President’s Cup with AFC Leopards in 2017.
