The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) and the Ministry of Education on Thursday declared Kisii ready to host the secondary schools term two games.

The games will kick off on Sunday at Gusii Stadium, Kisii School and Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho. The games will be held from  August 4- 8.

KSSSA chairman Kipchumba Maiyo, Nyanza region secretary Tom Odhiambo and Kisii County director Phillip Arap Chirchir said all preparations are complete.

They spoke at Kisii School during the opening of the referees and umpires coordinating clinic.

The officials inspected all the hosting facilities and were satisfied with the conditions. They were later joined by Nyanza Regional Director Lawrence Karuntimi.

“We are privileged to host the games. We are prepared and ready and all the arrangements are in place. My appeal to referees is that you make correct decisions and be professional,” said Chirchir, who officially opened the clinic.

Chirchir admitted that fans have become a challenge and appealed to them to allow students to enjoy the games.

Maiyo said: “We expect a highly competitive event. We are holding this clinic to update the referees and umpires on the latest rules and also ensure they read from the same script during games. Please be fair and give us the best teams.”

On his part, Odhiambo said most teams are on their way to Kisii.

“We expect teams to arrive from 8 am on Friday. The pitches are in a wonderful condition and all the referees are here for the clinic. However, the basketball and rugby clinics will be done on Saturday. Kisii is ready.”

John Okwemba said the team will train referees, umpires and games teachers on sports management and other technical aspects.

“We are also here to teach young talents on issues of safeguarding in sports. We also want to identify talent who will be taken for specialised training in Nairobi in December. We expect to see an excellent display of talent,” said Okwemba. He said his team will focus on football, volleyball, and basketball for both boys and girls.

Once again, Nyanza Sports Vibez has partnered with KSSSA and will donate nine trophies for the winning teams. They will also give medals for the Most Valuable Players in all disciplines.

The teams are expected to arrive on Friday. On Saturday, they will engage in tree planting while action will begin on Sunday. Term two games will feature football, volleyball, rugby 7s, netball and racquet games. Ends
