Uganda, Tanzania set to grace National Junior swimming gala

Marigiri said 36 teams have registered for the two-day event and preparations are almost complete.

Tanzania and Ugandan swimmers will grace the Kenya  Aquatics National Junior Swimming Championship slated for Uasin Gishu next weekend. 

Kenya Aquatics Secretary General, Collins Marigiri, said the presence of the swimmers from the neighbouring countries will spice up the event.

“ The presence of our neighbouring countries will make the competition very interesting for our swimmers. I believe our swimmers will up their game and post good times in the gala,” added Maraigiri. 

The championship, returning after a 10-year hiatus since the era of former chairman Ben Ekumbo, had a storied history of attracting top-tier teams from across the continent including participants from South Africa and Namibia.

This year promises to be no different with widespread anticipation and excitement surrounding the event. Marigiri said 36 teams have registered for the two-day event and preparations are almost complete.

"We will implement all necessary measures to ensure a successful gala," Marigiri stated.

He added: "The entire nation has rallied behind this event, with teams from as far as Mombasa and Laikipia already confirming their participation.

"We are particularly grateful to the Uasin Gishu County Aquatics Association for their extensive efforts in securing sponsors and partners including the County Government of Uasin Gishu," he stated.

KA technical committee, led by Omari Omar, added that Marigiri is working diligently to ensure the event meets international standards.

Omar encouraged teams to finalise their entries ahead of the fast-approaching deadline.

"No junior swimmer aspiring for the international stage should miss this meet," Omar emphasised.

"United States' star Michael Phelps himself was discovered at junior championships and was later moulded into one of the greatest Olympians in the world of swimming. This event is a crucial stepping stone for young talent."

Marigiri said the federation is committed to fostering the development of young athletes.

"Our mission includes providing structured training programs, exposure to competitive environments and creating a nurturing community for the sport. The upcoming championship will feature a range of events for different age groups, all meticulously planned to ensure the highest level of competition," he noted.
