Uganda's Schleck the main attraction in Vipingo Ridge race

The competition will conclude the season that started in February at Tatu City.

Uganda champion Jordan Schleck is among the cyclists expected to grace the final leg of the 2024 LOOP Safari Gravel Series set for  August 24 at Vipingo Ridge in Kilifi County.

The competition will conclude the season that started in February at Tatu City. This year’s series has traversed Kenya’s most challenging terrains, including the hills of Iten and Hell’s Gate.

Over 1,000 cyclists from around the globe took part in the first UCI Gravel Series event in June. LOOP DFS Digital Financial Services CEO Eric Muriuki expressed excitement about the upcoming finale.

Speaking at a ceremony celebrating 10 professional cyclists winners of three clubs in the Naivasha leg, Muriuki said: “The LOOP Safari Gravel Race Series has provided an excellent platform for our riders to showcase their skills and determination."

He added: “With its unique course and scenic beauty, Vipingo will offer an unforgettable finale to this remarkable series.”

In the men’s 120km LOOP category, Jordan Schleck claimed first place, followed by Eric Muhoza and Edwin Kieya.

Schleck clocked 4:03:27 hours to emerge winner with the Rwandese duo of Seth Hakizimana and Eric Muhoza clocking 4:04:15 and 4:04:30 respectively.

Moses Muiruri and Stanley Ngugi of Team Black Mamba completed the top five places in 4:05:10 and 4:11:52. 

The women’s category saw Xaveline Nirere, Claudette Nyirahabimana, and Mary Aleper take the top three spots. Clubs Black Mamba Development Squad, Ariya Finergy Solar Vortex, and Kenyan Riders were also recognised as they received prize money of Sh150,000, Sh 100,000, and Sh75,000, respectively.

Reflecting on his victory, Jordan Schleck said, “The Naivasha leg of the series was both challenging and rewarding. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to refine my skills and compete with fellow enthusiasts.”

Team Aamni’s Hanifa Said added: “The previous legs have highlighted endurance, skill and sportsmanship. We are certain the Vipingo leg will provide an unforgettable experience for all participants.”

The Vipingo race, which promises to be action-packed, will feature the LOOP Safari Gravel Series’ three categories: the 20 km for amateurs, the 60 km LOOP for cycling enthusiasts and the 120 km LOOP for professional cyclists.

The series, organised by the Amani  Project with LOOP DFS as the title sponsor and Huawei as the prize money sponsor, has attracted both local and international riders.
