Tigoi vows to claim East Africa regional girls' hockey title

Kenya girls hockey champions Tigoi have vowed to lift the East Africa Secondary Schools Games title.

Coach Moses Wawire said his team is determined to wrestle the title from compatriots Nyamira Girls.

“We have started the championship well because on Monday we beat Uganda’s national runners-up and drew with Uganda champions Kakungulu Memorial,” said Wawire.

He spoke at Mbale School of Hygiene, where his side battled to a barren draw with Kakungulu despite dominating the game.

“We dominated the game and had several chances but we did not utilise them. We have to blame ourselves for failing to win this game,” said Wawire.

Nyamira Girls got their campaign back on track after thumping Mt St Mary’s Namagunga from Uganda 5-0. Jacinta Opondo scored twice with Amanda Wamalwa, Stephanie Seba and Laureen Auma scoring one apiece.

Nyamira Girls, the defending regional champions, suffered a shock 2-0 loss against St Joseph’s Kitale in the opening game. Today, Nyamira play Kakungulu Memorial while Tigoi will be up against Sacred Heart Mushanga from Uganda.

In the boys’ category, St Anthony’s Kitale beat St Charles Lwanga 2-1 in a Kenyan affair. Linton Nayombe and Kevin Onyango were on target for St Joseph’s while Newton Mwangaza scored St Charles’ Lwanga’s consolation.

Defending champions Kakungulu defeated Kyanyondo 3-1 in another game. On Wednesday, Musingu High will play Arusha Meru from Tanzania as St Anthony’s Kitale battle Kyadondo from Uganda. St Charles Lwanga play Kakungulu Memorial.

In girls’ handball, Murinduko beat Kwanthanze 15-9 in the girls’ category while Hospital Hill narrowly edged Magnus 23-22 in the boys’ category.

 In netball, Bumala AC overcame Kenya’s Andersen 32-41 in a closely contested game while defending champions St Mary’s Kitende defeated St Noa 53-40.

In boys’ basketball, ITS Kigali humbled Kenya’s Agoro Sare 96-75 while Kenya’s other representative Dr Aggrey suffered an 80-69 loss against Buddo Secondary School.

In the girls’s 3x3 basketball, St Joseph’s Kitale Girls beat compatriots Nasokol Girls 12-10 while Butere Girls defeated Raila Education Centre 12-10.

In the boys’ category, St Joseph’s Kitale Boys narrowly beat Buddo Secondary School 16-15 in a thrilling match played at Amus College.
