Kenya will send two swimmers to the Africa Aquatics Open Water Training Camp slated for September 17-21 in Zanzibar.

The initiative by Africa Aquatics is aimed at promoting and developing open-water swimming across Africa.

The camp will focus on entry-level swimmers and seeks to prepare them for participation in international events including Africa and World Junior Open water championships.

Athletes will engage in two training sessions daily accompanied by educational lectures on various competition-related topics.

Kenya Aquatics (KA) Secretary General, Collins Marigiri, said they are keen to develop open water swimming which includes disciplines like triathlon and water polo.

“ We are keen to grow this discipline in the country. We want our swimmers to develop and be competitive in this facet of the sport and have a chance of winning medals on the international stage,” Marigiri added.

Marigiri has encouraged the various swimming clubs in the country to actively consider the opportunity and submit their entries promptly.

“We want as many people as possible to send their representatives for us to come up with a strong team to Zanzibar when we do our final selection," he added.

Elsewhere, 50 teams have registered for the opening gala of the Kiambu Aquatics swimming league at Regis School on September 21-22.

Defending champions Supermarlins will be keen to continue with their dominance with strong competition expected from schools like Potterhouse, Crawford,  Woodcreek, Nova and Mpesa Foundation among others.

Nova Sharks coach Alex Kaindi expressed confidence that his side can topple Supermarlins.

“We're back and we mean business. The introduction of this league has brought new energy to swimming in Kiambu, turning it into an exciting and competitive sport. I believe other counties will follow suit and start similar leagues. It's been a powerful motivator and is significantly improving performance" added Kaindi.

Kiambu Aquatics treasurer Francis Mwangi called on teams to prioritise clearing their membership fees, emphasising that no team will be included in the league standings if they have arrears.

"The funds collected will help us acquire essential equipment like System 7 touchpads which will enhance the competition experience," he noted.
