Nairobi County tourney attract top players from USA and Uganda

Uganda, South Sudan and the USA are part of the 300 players who will compete in the Nairobi County Chess Championship starting tomorrow at Wadi Degla Club in Runda. 

The event, which ends on Monday and is organised by the Nairobi County Chess Association, will feature an eight-round Classic tournament and an 11-round Blitz event, giving players numerous opportunities to test their skills and improve their ratings.

Local participants have been drawn from Mombasa, Kitale, Kisumu, Nyeri and Nakuru. 

The competition has attracted more than 30 chess clubs and schools— leaving no doubt about the growing interest in the game at both the club and school levels.

NCCA chairman Anthony Kionga emphasised the importance of the expanded rounds, which seek to foster more competitive play while providing valuable experience to players.

“By extending the rounds in both Classic and Blitz, we’re encouraging more competitive games and helping players gain valuable experience.We aim to expand the rating pool, not just for Nairobi, but for the country as a whole.  is will elevate the level of chess and increase participation at international events,” Kionga said. 

The top eight boards will be broadcast live and fans will have the opportunity to follow the matches in real-time.
