Cabinet Secretary for Sports Kipchumba Murkomen is doubling down on his mission to bring transparency in sports stating that elections across all federations are essential for building accountability.

Speaking at the launch of the Chemususu Dam Half Marathon at Talanta Plaza, Murkomen pointed to poor accountability as a major factor driving sponsors away.

“It’s disheartening to see our athletes ranked so low in terms of earnings. If we were to run our federations in an accountable manner, then sponsors will come in and there will be resources to run the affairs of sports,” Murkomen said.

He reiterated his commitment to deliver fair elections in the federations as soon as he took office.

“That is why you see me playing very hardball when it comes to elections in the federations. I am very serious about this issue. When I assumed office I promised there would be elections in the federations,” he said.

“We have FKF elections coming, we will have the AK elections next year and a number of other federations going forward,” he said.

He highlighted the need for fresh leadership, stressing that federations should offer others the opportunity to make a difference.

“I will be firm and the rules must be followed and accountability achieved. Other people need to be given the chance to make their contributions in the federations,” he said.

“You have to be aware that this is a stage, you come, do what you have to do and give the opportunity for other people to try also. It’s the same also in politics.”

The CS has been vocal about the upcoming FKF elections stating that incumbent Nick Mwendwa, who has already served his two four-year tenures, should not be allowed to vie again as a vice president on a Doris Petra ticket.

“The reason why sports in Kenya is poorly sponsored is because sponsors don’t have confidence in the organisers of different initiatives,” he said.

He, however, is happy with AK’s partnerships with the private sector.

He toured the AK headquarters at Riadha house on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Murkomen believes the Chemususu Half Marathon is a vital platform for nurturing young talent.

“It is through such initiatives that we identify and support emerging talents, giving athletes a platform to grow, excel and represent our nation on the global stage,” he said.
